The Bigger Video Picture

I’ve already discussed the first step in beginning with video.  If you missed that post, scroll down.  In that, I give you some ideas – and, hopefully, motivation – to get started.  Today, I’m going to talk about some bigger picture ideas.

Yes, I said below that you should only focus on one video at a time.  BUT that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at the big picture of what you are creating.  For your video marketing to become effective, you are going to have to create more than one video.  In fact, you are going to have to create many.

It’s important to have an idea of where you are going with your videos and you should create a flow or map that outlines what you are going to cover (topics), how they will be presented (type of video), and how often you will distribute your videos.

So that this doesn’t seem overwhelming, you don’t need to be thinking about EVERY video you will create this year or in the next five years.  What I want is for you to map out the next 5-10 videos.  Have an idea of what you’re going to do.  It may be a 3-part series on the basics of social media marketing, followed by a 5-part series on how to write killer copy, followed by a video on the latest trends and another video on the hot topics in your industry.

What is important is that you have a plan outlined.  This will do two things: one it will keep you focused moving forward; two, it can show you how you may be able to produce several of those at the same time and save time and money.   Even though I did say to focus on one video at a time, that doesn’t mean that once that video is shot that you can’t be working on the next.  Further, you may be shooting at an event where there is so much potential content that you simply have to gather as much as you can, knowing it will be the content for several videos.

The take away is to look at the big picture when planning your videos. (You didn’t think you were done with one video did you!)  There should be a strategy in place that takes you from one video to the next and so on.  It will save you time, money and will keep your video strategy  moving forward.

What do Google, Keywords and SEO have in common?

The short answer is EVERYTHING!

Whether you realize it or not, how you rank/appear on a Google search makes an impression on the person that is searching for you.  It’s the digital version of what you look like when you meet someone. Remember the saying “first impressions aren’t everything, but they are 90% of the impression a person has of you”  The same goes for the web and how you are seen on the web.  The impression you give when someone searches for you means something…whether consciously or subconsciously.

Your search engine optimization (SEO), your keywords and your strategy have everything to do with your Google rank and your first impression.

We hear from SO many people that they aren’t worried about their rank on Google because that’s not how they get their business.  That is the WRONG approach.  Even if every bit of your business comes from referrals, you can bet your last dollar that the vast majority of those referrals search for you on Google before they call.  Think about it.  You probably do the EXACT same thing when someone gives you a referral.  And it’s not just your website that leaves an impression…it’s you, as well.

Many companies have very little search engine optimization (SEO) strategy in place.  A cursory look at a website shows us that in less than a minute.  We can see quickly if you have an SEO strategy in place…and so can anyone else who knows what they are looking for.

Companies also use very generic keywords that lump them in with everyone else.  How do you think you’ll cut through the clutter with a keyword like “attorney”, “attorney at law”, “financial planner”, “dentist”, or “insurance specialist”?  It sounds crazy, yet that is what people do.  You need to set yourself APART from everyone else.

I encourage you to develop a search engine optimization (SEO) strategy immediately.  You may also want to look at developing a search engine marketing (SEM) strategy.  Both should be results-focused…meaning they need to actually accomplish something for your business.  After all, what’s the point in having a website if it’s not doing anything to help you get more business?

What is the first step to Video?

I’m often asked for the first step people should take to start with video.  The answer is simple: do ANYTHING!  The biggest thing that holds people back is over thinking it and the process.  It seems overwhelming to many, and complicated.  Let me let you in on a little secret…it’s not complicated and it’s not a big deal.

Yes, learning how to make really great videos does take some practice, but getting good at anything in life takes some practice.  The first step, though, is to start.

So, what’s the first step?  Just go and shoot a video.  Find a subject that excites you and/or about which your are passionate.  Then just go shoot a minute or two.  Once that is done, you’re on your way.  You can then look at what you’ve done, critique it, and make improvements for the next time.  Yes, there will be a next time!

If you’re a company looking to get started in video, then the first step could be simply to meet with a producer or company that can help you get started.  I find that most companies over think video.  I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be a strategy, but I’m saying is that you don’t need the perfect strategy in place to take the first step.  There are plenty of resources available that will help you refine your strategy (or, even, help you develop it!).

With the availability of low-cost cameras, anyone can get started.  It may not be the camera you end up using for the final product (although it can be), but it will get you capturing video, it can be a great means to practice…and again, it will take you past the first step.

As you probably know by now, YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine.  If you’re not using video, you are behind the curve.  The amount of video uploaded to YouTube on a daily basis is staggering.  If you are hesitating, trust me, your competition is not!  So take out your camera, your iPhone or whatever other device you already own to take video and go DO IT!  You’ll be happy to have taken the first step.  Usually, that is the hardest part!

Welcome to The Real David Henry

Ok..so since the url for my site is “The Real David Henry”, I thought it would make sense to make the first blog entry about the name.

If you Google “David Henry” you’ll find other David Henry’s sites (probably what you’d expect, right?). You’ll even find a site url that has the same middle initial as mine. So the url’s with my name are already taken and rank high in the search. I needed a way to be part of the search. Ultimately, I want to be ranked #1…who doesn’t?

So I needed to cut through and rank high in the Googlesphere.  I needed to find a way that will work, is relevant and that makes sense.  Hence, “The Real David Henry”. And as there isn’t anyone else claiming to be the real David Henry (and I am the real David Henry), I’m putting my stake in the ground (well, at least as far as the Internet is concerned).  I’m taking the the name and the site as mine. It only seems fitting.

But I am going to take it another step. If I’m going to be The Real David Henry, the content on this site and blog needs to be real. What does that mean? It means that I’m not going to talk about video marketing for video marketing sake. There will be real solutions that get results, whether that is getting new leads, selling a product, or moving someone into some kind of action. It means that I’m not going to talk about social media for social media sake. There should be a real business/marketing application that gets real results. The bottom line is that I want there to be real applications to what we discuss here. Theory has its place, but I think people want ideas and information that they can use now. That will help them move forward.

So now what?

Well, this is the beginning. I’m going to be writing about “real” marketing issues, how to use video and video marketing to help grow businesses and/or to get someone to take a desired action or next step. I’m going to talk about search engine optimization, search engine marketing, public relations, social media, websites and their role in attracting business and how all of these things work together…in a real way.

Some of these will be written blogs and others well be video. After all, I can’t preach the amazing power of video without using examples, can I?

I will also be addressing issues and questions brought to me from clients, prospective clients, partners and others. Feel free to make a suggestion and please comment. I want to know what you think…not only about this entry, but anything I may post in the future.
